This initiative aims to elevate public awareness regarding the vulnerable wildlife that is native to Queensland, shedding light on the various challenges and dangers they encounter in their natural habitats, with the ultimate goal of inspiring action and conservation efforts to safeguard their existence.

Project components

  • Artist Book

  • Augmented Reality (AR)

  • Custom-made Plinth

It all starts with an idea….

Concept

This immersive installation serves as a captivating showcase of the rich biodiversity and dynamic landscapes across six distinct regions of Queensland, offering visitors a multisensory experience and insights into some of Queensland’s endangered wildlife.

The Artist Book

The purpose of this artist book is to creatively combine historical cartography with contemporary visual art to narrate the story of endangered wildlife. The book contains QR codes for an immersive augmented reality experience.

Problems Encountered:

  • Fragile Condition (torn, ripped)

  • Has mold and white ants.

Final decision:

  • Due to the rough condition of the Atlas, it will now be a base for a digitally printed artist book.

This Atlas which is the base of the artist book was released in 1886 and is now 139 years old, and with its age comes fragility.

This serves as a metaphor for the forever changing landscape and wildlife in Australia.

The Artist book includes artwork of flora & fauna and typography created digitally and by using gelli printing. The floral elements in the book are being inspired by a book from Joseph Banks - Florilegium, which was completed while he was voyaging onboard with the good old Captain James Cook between 1768 and 1771.

This old Atlas has had a rough life, the pages are quite fragile, and the cover has part of the image completely gone. To preserve this a little, plus transforming it into a unique piece, the original concept was to remove the binding and have the front and back covers coated in an epoxy resin that will be infused with some real flora. Unfortunately, the Atlas was proven too far gone, so a digital rendition of the artist book was born.

Augmented Reality

The purpose of including Augmented Reality (AR) was for a few reasons.

  • To engage viewers by bringing static images to life

  • Add a dynamic layer to the narrative of #ATRISK

  • A futuristic design was incorporated to help attract a younger audience and to also help people see that this is how they may look in the future if we dont take action now.

Custom Plinth

The custom plinth was created beyond mere functionality.

  • To elegantly display the artist book and create a focal point for viewers

  • Enhances the experience by providing a physical anchor for the narrative of #ATRISK

  • A modern and sleek design was incorporated to attract a diverse audience and highlight the importance of the artwork on display.
